This Sunday we are going to discuss STATIN DRUGS.   At a recent Hospital Conference the newer cholesterol lowered drugs known as PCSK9 inhibitors which are still in clinical trials were reviewed.  They are showing promise but must be injected once or twice a month.

Jim K4JWA suggested reading the book "THE LAST WELL PERSON. How to stay well despite the Health-Care System," by Nortin Hadler M.D.   I bought a used version from Amazon.com for about 4 dollars and just can't put it down!!!!  The book is logical and not flim flam, the author went to Harvard  and is a Professor at the Univ. of N.C. at Chapel Hill.  We will throw some of his ideas into the discussion Sunday.

      Here's NEWS....Pensacola, FL., August 1923, via "Aeronautical Digest"...a novel plan for teaching radio code to student naval aviators has been under trial and gives eery indications of

 being both practical and valuable.  The plan is to teach students radio code while they are asleep.  Before turning in at night the student adjusts the receivers on his head which are used in the regular class.  A watch is stood throughout the night by expert operations on the sending key and throughout the night hey send at high-speed, about 10 words in excess of the student's capacity to receive.  It has ben found that in his conscious hours the following day, the student is able to receive messages at the speed they were sent to him while he was asleep.  HOW MANY HAVE TRIED THIS?  (I Put the code machine under my pillow and then started counting sheep.)

Did you hear about the drunk who was wandering round the parking lot of a bar, bumping into every car and then rubbing the roofs of the cars.  The manager comes out of the bar and stops the guy, "What the heck are you doing, he asks, "I'm looking for my car, and I can't  find it."  So how does feeling the roof  help you?"  Well, the drunk replied, "My car has two blue lights and a siren on the roof."

This Sunday, George Vilican, DDS, KE8GA , North Carolina, requested a talk on "Root Canals."  George, we hope will be on board this Sunday as I am NOT a dentist, BUT have had several root canals like you fellows have probably had also.  Once you have had a root canal you do not want another! 

     Since you have 32 teeth it means you could have 32 root canals so it is a subject we should cover (with something).  It is also possible you could have 64 root canals if the dentist decides to leave some of the pulp behind (good for business?)

     If George is not  on board, perhaps another dentist might help out--I have pulled, or wedged out a few teeth in my career as a family doctor, so if all fails you will hear the story, but not from the horses mouth!  Tune in should be fun.

    This Sunday we discussed "DVT" and suddenly my signal disappeared--but you hung on--except for one station--what happened shouldn't happen to you so here goes:  In using the mike I inadvertently shoved a paper against the transceiver dial and suddenly I was going out bound on 14.345--someone followed me up--my Icom angel--and told me I was off frequency!  

     This Sunday we will discuss "THE DIRTY BOMB."  There are over 2 million radio-active sources in the USA alone and 200,000 are at risk. A "Dirty bomb" is a psychological weapon that can be used to terrorize populations.  It is not a weapon of mass destruction, it is a weapon of mass disruption.  It is very expensive and difficult to clean up.  We must educate people not to panic.  We must keep it out of the hands of those who have access and who are determined to use the material for a dirty bomb.  To make the morning more enjoyable we will throw in a little Sarin, Anthrax, Tabun and mention a few others like Ricin--tune in--and don't forget to bring your face mask.  

AND, remember:  "Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that come from bad judgment."

This Sunday we will discuss, by demand, "DEEP VENOUS THROMBOSIS."  The three factors of Virchow's triad, venous stasis, hypercoagulability, changes in the endothelial wall, result in "DVTs."

     When in Med school, we had a professor who exhibited Virchow's triad and he demanded that his inferior vena cava be tied off to prevent pulmonary emboli....no one would do it--but one surgeon!  He lived a normal life span with "piano legs!"  He was an unpleasant site in shorts but he had the guts to save his own life--he was a pathologist.

     Tune in should be fun time.

This Sunday we will discuss "CATARACTS" by request.  I hope by this time you'all have received your CME certificates providing you have attended at least 5 sessions and you are an active member.  Echolink was mentioned but it is my understanding that one can get a maximum number of 8 on board.  I used Echolink back in 2008 but have lost the memory track and the download.  We have been receiving 40+ stations/per week which is good but could be improved since our record is 54.  

 

Did you know, your tongue is the only muscle in your body that is attached at only one end except in a few whereas it is not attached at all.

 Last Sunday we discussed "MARIJUANA."  We got through only 1/3 of the contents so we will finish this Sunday.  We all learned something, I did--that "bath salts" isn't BATH SALTS!  

We also learned that Mr. Gallup did a poll and found that 56% of Americans favor legalizing the stuff.  We will take our own poll Sunday so tune in, should be fun.

This Sunday, by request. we will discuss "MARIJUANA".  it's an interesting subject since it is in the news every day and few of us know what it's all about, that is, the good boys (?) who have never tried it!.

    Ian K3IK is back in the ring and he's livened up a lot of dull sessions lately with his intriguing remarks---he's worth listening to ever since I tried to tell him to "Never miss a chance to shut up!"   We've had some interesting weather reports lately, hard to believe you guys are a little cool since I just came in from swimming .

Jerry, N4TSC, added some comments regarding intoxicants:

I suspect that the same arguments regarding beer can be applied to Marijuana, therefore in the interest of full disclosure and in preparation for Warren's talk next Sunday, I would like to recall the comments of Cliff Clavin in a discussion with Norm Peterson regarding the value of beer.

 

One night at Cheers ... Cliff Clavin commented to his buddy ... Norm Peterson:

 

"Well ... ya see ... Norm ... it's like this ... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted ... it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This Sunday by request, (Jerry N4TSC) we will discuss the "Biologicals," a group of medicines which began to appear about ten years ago and which are now making a bigger and bigger splash (Epogen, Enbrel, Remicade, Herceptin etc.).

     Biological medicines are medical drugs produced using biotechnology--that is, therapeutic products created through the genetic manipulation of living cells or organisms.  They are complex and have a larger molecular weight than medicines produced chemically.

This Sunday by request, we will talk about "Influenza."  Going back in history we find it fatally attacking the young (immunity not built up) and the old (immunity run down).  Two weeks ago in Tampa there was the death of a 26-year old mother who left two children--beware---it can strike close to home.  Everyone should have had their flu shots by now.......

     Everyone should have received their "Aether"....  It is also time to pay Danny your membership dues for the year which are due on Jan. 1.  CME Category II certificates will be sent out in January.
