MARCO Grand Rounds for December 1, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday by request, we will talk about "Influenza."  Going back in history we find it fatally attacking the young (immunity not built up) and the old (immunity run down).  Two weeks ago in Tampa there was the death of a 26-year old mother who left two children--beware---it can strike close to home.  Everyone should have had their flu shots by now.......
Everyone should have received their "Aether"....  It is also time to pay Danny your membership dues for the year which are due on Jan. 1.  CME Category II certificates will be sent out in January.

And remember what Confucius said, ""Viagra is like Disneyland...a one hour wait for a 2-minute ride.

MARCO Grand Rounds for November 24, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will discuss "THE PROS AND CONS OF ROBOTIC SURGERY."  In 2000 there were only 1,000 robotic surgeries world-wide.  Last year there were half a million...is there an arms race by hospitals eager to attract new patient by using ROBOTS?  OR are they really that good?

Tune in should be fun....

MARCO Grand Rounds for November 17, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This week we will comment on the new guidelines redefining statin use.  Actually this is not earth-shattering news as the press seems to think, since most of us treat individual patients as individual patients. However, it is a good subject which goes back to "should statins be sold over the counter?" and "should all diabetics be taking a statin?"

All one has to go back to is the proliferation of trans fats, saturated hydrogenated fats, being better as margerine than butter--now the table has turned, and butter is the hot baby.

NOTE: ARRL Phone Sweepstakes is this weekend, so it is best to occupy the frequency early and defend it aggressively.

MARCO Grand Rounds for November 9, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

DISEASE OF THE WEEK WEAK:  "Clostridium Difficile"  Tune in Sunday, and be sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds after the net with soap and water.  Lot of hype this week about resistant strains...When is Leprosy going to make a comeback?  Believe it or not I did pick up two cases when I was stationed in Key West in the Navy--One actually had the face of the MGM lion--anyone know the story of that MGM lion?  Very interesting--maybe we can talk about it.

MARCO Grand Rounds for November 2, 2013

From Warren, KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will discuss "ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE."   This condition is expected to affect one in every 85 persons by 2050 and there is no cure.  Early symptoms are usually  thought to be "age related concerns.  If you forget to tune in you should have.  Perhaps someone out there will have a good "supplemental cure?" (like rag-weed mustard.)  AND, if you're not on board Sunday, we know Y...

No Zoster cup cakes this week, only amyloid plaques--add your humor to a very sad mourning

MARCO Grand Rounds for October 27, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

We had 33 check-ins today with moderate mid-skip propagation.  This coming Sunday, by request, we will discuss "SCIATICA."

Hi-lights of the Oct. 20th talk on "Herpes Zooster" were:  The Europeans are not immuninizing their children with chicken pox vaccine because they think that his prohibits re-vitalizing contacts of older adults with exposure to the actual disease.  Also, it was found there were more cases of shingles in the US since the immunization program was started here.   Also, you can give a child chickenpox by inoculating him with shingles pox sera but you cannot give the child zoster unless he previously had varicella.  One of our check-ins reported treating a farmer 4 times for shingles!  Supposedly only 1 in 25 will have just a second dose.  We all learn something even when we have a dumb subject!!!!

MARCO Grand Rounds for October 18, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will discuss a subject right from the horse's mouth--Herpes Zooster or "Shingles".  Pardon me as I scratch my right sided 3rd Lumbar dermatome.  I turned down the Zostavax 2007 vaccine because it had only a 50% reduction rate--now I wished I had taken it---Isn't that "MUrphy's Law?"  The vaccine is not cheap--runs around $170 at last check.
You fellows with a good pain threshold  should be able to hold out without much difficulty--remember how to check your pain threshold?  Simply see how long you can go without blinking--if you can go over one minute you probably have a good pain threshold  but may end up with a dry cornea!  Try it and report your findings Sunday--a free "Zooster Cup Cake" for the leading Superman!

Hope the screaming episodes will be over by Sunday as I am now in my12th day.   Tune in should be FUN.

MARCO Grand Rounds for October 13, 2013

From Warren, KD4GUA:

Due to a series of malfunctions last Sunday, we had to postpone the lecture on "IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?"  This an update and since not all the States have the same rules it was thought noteworthy to present the facts on just what you should do if in an emergency while traveling.

This came through and am putting it in small print as I can't turn it upside down....Pertaining to a Norwegian farmer in Minnesota....when he accidentally lost 50  cents in the outhouse, he immediately threw in his watch and billfold explaining, "I'm not going down dere yust for 50 cents."

Tune in, should be fun.

Saturday, October 05, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for October 6, 2013

From Warren, KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will discuss "IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE," an update on emergencies which may occur while you are traveling, such as "What does an orthopedist know about a heart attack in an airplane at 32,000 feet?"  (About as much as he knows about measles at ground level?)  It is an interesting subject for an update--Arnold WB6OJB, had some interesting experiences he shared previously.  Tune in should be fun.

Monday, September 23, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for September 29, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will by demand, discuss "Sarcoidosis."   This is an interesting and tantalizing problem--we don't see too much of it--but when we do it can be a delight in that the underlying lesion was not cancer.
The October "AETHER" has been sent to all Officers and Directors (Harry EDP and Linda and Bernie's bounced due to apparent changes in their email addresses)  If anyone wishes to receive a pdf copy by email let me know, otherwise it will be in your mailbox in about ten days.
Due to LOUSY propagation it has been suggested using radio+ echolink for Grand Rounds--if you are interested let me know--Skype is limited and Bruce thinks echolink would be a better alternative plus.

For the FIRST time since using 14.342MHz, we hit 40 check-ins Sunday.

Thursday, September 19, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for September 22, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will discuss MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS and the newer drugs used to combat relapses...don't miss this one.

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for September 8, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

THIS SUNDAY we will discuss SARIN GAS.    If we have time PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY will be brought up.  Both involve nerves and both are more or less prevalent in the papers or in our offices.
Last week we talked about the HISTORY OF ANESTHESIA.  Those of you who missed it may read about it in the December Aether (not the next issue but the following one)

Question of the week....does beer contain female hormones?  Can heavy male beer drinkers turn into near females???

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

MARCO Grand Wounds for September 1, 2013

From Warren, KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will discuss "THE HISTORY OF ANESTHESIA."

BASICALLY THERE were THREE TYPES OF ANESTHESIA.  First there was vocal anesthesia where you tell the patient "It won't hurt."  Then there was local anesthesia where you inject around the object with a numb--er."  Finally, there was "Bulgarian Anesthesia" where you hit the fellow on the head with a  hammer!  Vocal, Local and Bulgarian!

Just think about what it was like back during the Revolution when all they had was alcohol and vocal and Bulgarian types.

Tune in, should be fun.....

Thursday, August 15, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for August 18, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will resume our discussions, the subject being "CELIAC UPDATE."  Can a 50 year old man suddenly come down with Celiac disease?

Those who heroically checked into the net the past two weeks when no medical discussion was held cannot receive Category II credit since no educational program was presented.  However, credit will resume this Sunday.

While in Washington D.C. I found the capital quiet and tranquil as Congress was not in session and all the journalists had left town.   Visited Dulles Air Museum, the American Museum of American History and went to Mt. Vernon--what a view from the front porch overlooking the Potomac River (the Spanish pronunciation is Pot-O-Mac).).  Mt. Vernon has had a renaissance since my last visit and is even more enticing to visit--besides, Washington was and is my #1 hero.

Join us Sunday, should be fun!

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for August 4, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

Vacation Time....KD4GUA will be on vacation in the Nation's Capital so will miss the next two weeks....instead, we will have Vox Pox, voice of the people--YOU!  Danny W4DAN promises to tell how he turned from an introvert to an extrovert (someone take notes, this should be good!) next Sunday.

The Bad Guy seems to have moved into our old frequency at our time--he lingers like leprosy...Hope everyone got their "Aether" without being "torn up" by the P.O. machines!

We had 32 check-ins which isn't bad for the new frequency...You guys (we had no girls this
Sunday) voted 7 to 1 to allow dogs in the waiting room--that is 4-legged ones.....they, the dogs,  must be calm, clean,  and behaved in order to get a govt certified PT (pet certified) dog tag which enables them to legitimately spread the fleas to your patients (good for business?)

I hope the hurricanes stay away while I'm away, will lower my antenna, (too bad I can't lower the house!)(maybe the hurricanes will do it for me)?

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for July 28, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will finish up "defibrillation" and move on to two different topics:
     1.  "Pet Therapy"  Should we keep pets in the waiting room to calm patients down?
     2.  "How an introvert can be happier: Act like an Extrovert."  Taken from an article in the Wall St. Journal of July 23 by Sumathi Reddy.

Tune in should be fun...

The following two weeks I will be on vacation...do we have any volunteers to help out on Grand Rounds?

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for July 14, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will discuss "Low Testosterone Levels."  (also, referred to as "low rhubarb titers." )   It seems the hottest items out there are low Vitamin D levels and low testosterone levels---so you take both and what happens?  Tune in, should be fun!

We are still allergic to the terrorist so we are steering clear of the lower frequency and hanging out at 14.342.

Tuesday, July 02, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for July 7, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

This Sunday we will go for the "Disease of the Week," only it will be "DiseaseS of the Week."
No. 1....Should nurse practitioners be able to treat patients without Physician oversight?
No. 2....The Morning After Pill.
No. 3....Sunscreen as a youth serum.

And remember:  "Stressed" spelled backwards is DESSERTS--I believe I'll take chocolate and ice cream.

Tune in should be fun--there was an article Chip might have missed whereas it is postulated that pot smoking tips one over the cliff into schizophrenia if one is prone.  Oh yes, there is an outfit in Colorado now selling coin machines that dispenses the stuff.  If you want the stock symbol, tune in Sunday.

Sunday, June 23, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for June 30, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

Due to Field Day and other factors, the weekly discussion on "LIGHT" was postponed until next Sunday.  New Frequency is 14.342.

This is a very interesting subject and we will include basic knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum which is classified by wavelength into radio, microwave, infrared, the visible spectrum, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.

If we have time, we will then diverge into "Light Therapy, Q & A."  Might be a good idea to bone up on these subjects prior so as to broaden and lighten "up" the subject.  If you would like to be a guest lecturer on a Sunday morning don't be bashful--try your luck!

The terrorist was on 14.307 attempting to sell real estate on "field day."

Monday, June 10, 2013

MARCO Grand Rounds for June 16, 2013

From Warren KD4GUA:

Last Sunday we had 31 check-ins, down about 20% from what we had on the old frequency of 14.307, but still holding up fairly well under the change circumstances.  The Terrorist was on 14.307 only briefly Sunday--maybe he's beginning to stutter----Remember we will be on the subrosa freq.

This Sunday we will discuss "LIGHT THERAPY."  This mode is used for a variety of conditions ranging from auto immune disorders including psoriasis and eczema to wound healing, depression, neonatal jaundice  and affective disorders.

Have any of you ever been in total darkness?  I experienced it going down a Polish salt mine in a make-shift elevator--PITCH BLACK!!!!  Consider how worthless our eyes would be if we lived in such an environment and what that environment would do to our bodies.

We have been ladyless lately so make sure all of you take a bath, maybe we can get them back.
