This Sunday we will discuss Lupus. This is a fuzzy disease that has many questions pertaining to it with very few answers. It is a broad topic but we will attempt to dive in to learn more about this "Wolf" disease (the name comes from the word "wolf.") Tune in should be educational and will help brush away the cobwebs.

MARCO Grand Rounds for January 10, 2010

This Sunday, by request we will discuss "Water on the Brain--or hydrocephalus." (Greek) by request. This condition in newborns is more prevalent than Downs syndrome...also, it is estimated that 50% of all shunts fail within two years requiring further surgery to replace them.

The condition is often mistaken for Parkinson's Disease in the older age group.

Tune in should be fun.

This Sunday we will discuss the "Topic of the Week." It happens to be "COFFEE" good? bad? There is a lot of new "stuff" evolving about the action of caffeine and it warrants a discussion.

"Steve" a paramedic who checked in wanted us to talk about Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) but since "coffee" is on the front burner we will postpone the brain water to the following week.

The discussion was good last week as we talked about the use of x-rays in shoe stores and if today's CT outlets were over utilizing a known dangerous substance for valor. Harry mentioned his residents from overseas were better versed than our US grads in the use of physical diagnosis and not technology for making simple diagnoses. Paul in Atherton stated, "A doctor's skill cannot be replaced by technology." This fits into the "Medical News of the Week" event for another go at it as we failed to cover all the details. Wear youir lead aprons....as some amps are putting out x-ray.

Last Sunday was most enjoyable talking about HOARDING....especially you guys and girls who are hoarding the green stuff with the presidents.

This week, HUM-BUG....since no requests for discussions were made we resort to the "News of the Week: which is: Study Warns Radiation Dose From a Single Test Can Trigger Disease in Some People." This article refers to Aether's front page in October, "RADIATION RISKS." I can remember when they fitted my shoes by x-ray--not any more! "You shouldn't kill a fly with a sledge-hammer when a fly-swatter can do the job.."

This Sunday we will continue the discussion of the new guidelines for breast mammograms and cervical pap smears. If we have time we will chip in with another attempt to visit a hoard house, where nothing gets thrown out....don't laugh one in 50 of us fit this category.

Got rained out by contesters Sunday so we will try again this Sunday....Planned to discuss the new breast and cx guidelines and throw in a little about visiting a hoard house (what causes people to hoard?) a good NP discussion. Any other suggestions?

Sunday put into effect those new sun spots Danny was talking about and every freak (freq - Ed.) was taken around 14.307 at 10 a.m EST.

Website hacked!!

On November 7, 2009 MARCO's Website was hacked. It appears that the login password was compromised. Every html page on the site had a bit of code added to it that would download malware to the computer of a visitor.

If you visited the MARCO Website between November 7 and November 14, I strongly urge you to scan your computer for viruses and malware.

AS of this writing, the problem has been fixed, and the members of MARCO's Internet Committee are taking action to render the site more secure.

Another Great Memory

Unless your TV has been broken, you know by now that today is the 20th
anniversary of the iconic Berlin Wall coming down.

We were on a European trip and by chance were in a West Berlin hotel
when */it/* happened. After a few hours the excitement calmed down and
East Berlin/Germany, for the first time, was allowing tourists to cross
over the wall at the Brandenberg Gate to visit the city. I decided to
see if I could cross over for a short tour of that communist city. As I
learned later, I was one of the first tourists - and the first American
- to cross over. The wall didn't come down in the literal sense at that
time, but temporary ramps were built up & over in a few places
permitting visitors to enter East Berlin.

I left my dear Aileen in the hotel for a few hours not wanting to
subject her to what might be a somewhat 'dicey' situation. So I walked,
and walked, and walked - or did I say that already? - Since I couldn't
speak German, I didn't feel comfortable taking public transportation -
streetcars, buses, etc.

After several hours of walking alone into the neighborhoods, business
sections, etc., I headed back west to the crossing. As I walked by a
street car turntable on which a streetcar was in the process of being
turned around 180 degs. getting ready for the return trip, the two crew
members saw me and recognized that I was probably an American. They ran
up to me. grabbed my arms and - all smiles - led me onto the "tram".
They couldn't speak English and I certainly didn't speak German but that
didn't stop them from explaining - in rapid Deutsche - what we were
seeing out the window as we traveled through the neighborhoods. They
let me out at the wall and also left me with a stunning memory.

Yes, the world has changed. A lot.

MARCO Grand Rounds for November 8, 2009

We had a very attentive audience last Sunday as we discussed Prostate cancers. Apparently, as Bruce KM2L requested, they all brought their prostates to the mike with a few exceptions--Hi Linda, Ellen! We barely touched this sensitive subject so we are bringing it back this Sunday.

There were two German gentlemen (?) on our frequency and since they wouldn't move in the past we had to go down to 14.306.

Will need updates on oldtimers from Bruce and a Marco article from Arnold for the next Aether. Keep the blue side up.

MARCO Grand Rounds for September 6, 2009

This sunday by request we will be discussing an article that appeared in the Aug. 21 edition of Medical Economics page 34 titled "A GREAT IDEA TURNING BAD," by Samuel Bierstock MD. An excerpt: "Electronic records.....means an audit trail that has begun the salivation process of every malpractice attorney who has finally realized what is about to be imposed on the medical profession."

We will attempt to keep the politics out of it but our profession is on trial. We laughed at problems like this before and the proverbial foot got in our door and wallaaaaaa now every one wants to stand between we physicians and our patients with open palms. Will try to make it fun but will need some help.
