We had 33 check-ins today with moderate mid-skip propagation.  This coming Sunday, by request, we will discuss "SCIATICA." 

Hi-lights of the Oct. 20th talk on "Herpes Zooster" were:  The Europeans are not immuninizing their children with chicken pox vaccine because they think that his prohibits re-vitalizing contacts of older adults with exposure to the actual disease.  Also, it was found there were more cases of shingles in the US since the immunization program was started here.   Also, you can give a child chickenpox by inoculating him with shingles pox sera but you cannot give the child zoster unless he previously had varicella.  One of our check-ins reported treating a farmer 4 times for shingles!  Supposedly only 1 in 25 will have just a second dose.  We all learn something even when we have a dumb subject!!!!

This Sunday we will discuss a subject right from the horse's mouth--Herpes Zooster or "Shingles".  Pardon me as I scratch my right sided 3rd Lumbar dermatome.  I turned down the Zostavax 2007 vaccine because it had only a 50% reduction rate--now I wished I had taken it---Isn't that "MUrphy's Law?"  The vaccine is not cheap--runs around $170 at last check. 

You fellows with a good pain threshold  should be able to hold out without much difficulty--remember how to check your pain threshold?  Simply see how long you can go without blinking--if you can go over one minute you probably have a good pain threshold  but may end up with a dry cornea!  Try it and report your findings Sunday--a free "Zooster Cup Cake" for the leading Superman!

 

Hope the screaming episodes will be over by Sunday as I am now in my12th day.   Tune in should be FUN.

Due to a series of malfunctions last Sunday, we had to postpone the lecture on "IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?"  This an update and since not all the States have the same rules it was thought noteworthy to present the facts on just what you should do if in an emergency while traveling. 

 

     This came through and am putting it in small print as I can't turn it upside down....Pertaining to a Norwegian farmer in Minnesota....when he accidentally lost 50  cents in the outhouse, he immediately threw in his watch and billfold explaining, "I'm not going down dere yust for 50 cents."

This Sunday we will by demand, discuss "Sarcoidosis."   This is an interesting and tantalizing problem--we don't see too much of it--but when we do it can be a delight in that the underlying lesion was not cancer.

This Sunday we will discuss "THE HISTORY OF ANESTHESIA." 

 

BASICALLY THERE were THREE TYPES OF ANESTHESIA.  First there was vocal anesthesia where you tell the patient "It won't hurt."  Then there was local anesthesia where you inject around the object with a numb--er."  Finally, there was "Bulgarian Anesthesia" where you hit the fellow on the head with a  hammer!  Vocal, Local and Bulgarian!

 

Just think about what it was like back during the Revolution when all they had was alcohol and vocal and Bulgarian types.

     This Sunday we will resume our discussions, the subject being "CELIAC UPDATE."  Can a 50 year old man suddenly come down with Celiac disease?

      Those who heroically checked into the net the past two weeks when no medical discussion was held cannot receive Category II credit since no educational program was presented.  However, credit will resume this Sunday.

    While in Washington D.C. I found the capital quiet and tranquil as Congress was not in session and all the journalists had left town.   Visited Dulles Air Museum, the American Museum of American History and went to Mt. Vernon--what a view from the front porch overlooking the Potomac River (the Spanish pronunciation is Pot-O-Mac).).  Mt. Vernon has had a renaissance since my last visit and is even more enticing to visit--besides, Washington was and is my #1 hero.

Vacation Time....KD4GUA will be on vacation in the Nation's Capital so will miss the next two weeks....instead, we will have Vox Pox, voice of the people--YOU!  Danny W4DAN promises to tell how he turned from an introvert to an extrovert (someone take notes, this should be good!) next Sunday.

 

The Bad Guy seems to have moved into our old frequency at our time--he lingers like leprosy...Hope everyone got their "Aether" without being "torn up" by the P.O. machines!

 

We had 32 check-ins which isn't bad for the new frequency...You guys (we had no girls this

Sunday) voted 7 to 1 to allow dogs in the waiting room--that is 4-legged ones.....they, the dogs,  must be calm, clean,  and behaved in order to get a govt certified PT (pet certified) dog tag which enables them to legitimately spread the fleas to your patients (good for business?)

 

I hope the hurricanes stay away while I'm away, will lower my antenna, (too bad I can't lower the house!)(maybe the hurricanes will do it for me)?

 Due to Field Day and other factors, the weekly discussion on "LIGHT" was postponed until next Sunday.  New Frequency is 14.342.

 

     This is a very interesting subject and we will include basic knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum which is classified by wavelength into radio, microwave, infrared, the visible spectrum, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.

 

     If we have time, we will then diverge into "Light Therapy, Q & A."  Might be a good idea to bone up on these subjects prior so as to broaden and lighten "up" the subject.  If you would like to be a guest lecturer on a Sunday morning don't be bashful--try your luck!

 

     The terrorist was on 14.307 attempting to sell real estate on "field day."

     Last Sunday we had 31 check-ins, down about 20% from what we had on the old frequency of 14.307, but still holding up fairly well under the change circumstances.  The Terrorist was on 14.307 only briefly Sunday--maybe he's beginning to stutter----Remember we will be on the subrosa freq.

 

     This Sunday we will discuss "LIGHT THERAPY."  This mode is used for a variety of conditions ranging from auto immune disorders including psoriasis and eczema to wound healing, depression, neonatal jaundice  and affective disorders.

 

      Have any of you ever been in total darkness?  I experienced it going down a Polish salt mine in a make-shift elevator--PITCH BLACK!!!!  Consider how worthless our eyes would be if we lived in such an environment and what that environment would do to our bodies. 

 

     We have been ladyless lately so make sure all of you take a bath, maybe we can get them back.

Florida University Medical School and thought I could pass his thoughts on to you....

     Since we basically ARE what we EAT you guys who look like a tomato are eating too many tomatoes!  rosy cheeks etc.  I asked this expert "There are no secrets in medicine, why are there so many secrets in nutrition?"  He gave a smart answer "MONEY!"  Anyway, we will have no advertisements so join in and add  to the confusion.  It is a vital subject now-a-days since the rumor is that health insurance rates will soon be set by your BMI

MARCO Grand Rounds for May 26, 2013

   The terrorist was back this weekend and almost completely wiped out Grand Rounds--a short skip also didn't help....we had only 19 check-ins whereas we normally have 35-40.  We had to resort to 14.344 but there was a net or a schedule on 14.345 which overlapped so we had to go down. 

     Danny and I agreed that this bad guy is not going away.  However, it may end up being a good thing (?) ( Every cloud has a silver lining).  Therefore:   If we can't use 14.307 go to 14.344.  If we are not there go DOWN 2 to 14.342, if not there go down 2 to 14.340 until you pick us up (decreasing in increments of 2).  We thought moving the CW net up to 14.307 at l0:30 Eastern time might be a deterrent but that is up to the CW net.

     Everyone on Listserve should have gotten the June pdf edition of "Aether."  The printed edition will be in the mail shortly.  Photos taken in Myrtle Beach will be in the August edition as they didn't arrive in time for the June issue.  If anyone would like AETHER  EITHER the printed or the pdf version please advise, if not, you will receive both.

     Last Sunday the "Terrorist" was waiting for us and we had to switch to 14.344.  Propagation was poor and lots of QRN so we lost a lot of members....SO, because the topic was so important we are going to continue the topic "BARIATRIC SURGERY" which includes lap bands & gastric by-pass procedures. 

     This topic is so important because now, surgical treatment of Diabetes Mellitus is the treatment of choice for those 100 lbs overweight.  This will be a banana---bonanza, for the surgeons in that the mortality is less than 1% at 6 months.  It will also be a lollipop for the lawyers for that 1%.

     There doesn't seem to be any way to waylay the intruder since he is using all sorts of gadgets to deter us and two wrongs don't make a right.  How about moving CW back to 14.307,  

30 minutes before net time?  This "slap on the wrist" by the FCC doesn't work with psychopaths.

This Sunday we will discuss the relatively new procedure "SLEEVE GASTRECCTOMY," for those morbidly obese.  This laproscopic procedure resolves 56% of diabetes, 49% of hypertension, 43% of hyperlipidemia and 60% of obstructive sleep apnea...besides it is quicker, safer and diminishes the production of the hormone Ghrelin, which has been described as a hunger-regulating hormone.

     We will start at 14.307 at 11 am Eastern Daylight time and if the "thing" (the terrorist)  is in his obstructive mood we will automatically move to our alternate frequency (and if occupied, go DOWNstream till we hit an open freq.)  DO NOT MENTION THE ALTERNATE FREQUENCY.  It would help  if some members would rag chew starting 30 minutes prior on 14.307, although last week he was already spewing his foul language at 10:20 am.....  In this way we can aid the monitors listening to his trash.  If you really want to get turned-off--listen to this LID!  (He is great for activating skunk glands.)

At the meeting in Myrtle Beach, we decided to go BACK to 14.307, since the terrorist has been warned by the FCC (in December!).  If we get interference we will move up to 14.344.  Do NOT mention 14.344 on the air, simply say, "Resort to alternate frequency."  It would help if we  get a rag chew going at 10:30 EASTERN to keep the frequency open.

MARCO Grand Rounds for April 21, 2013

 This Sunday we will be on 14.344 MHz at 11 am Eastern.  The subject will be "PREPARING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY PATIENTS."  (For details see JAMA April 10, 2013, page 1471, an article by the Assoc. Senior Editor.)  

 The following Sunday there will be NO NET as we will be meeting in Myrtle Beach, FL for the Annual MARCO meeting.  Members of the Board of Directors are mandated to be on board unless they are on duty or have adequate excuses.  All members of MARCO or guests are welcome.  Our President Mary Farvaro is counting on your presence if able.

 I will be driving up since I found the air fare for two was over $1,200 and it  is only about 600 miles and I am a profound cheapskate when it comes to being ripped off!!!!  (If  I hadn't landed at their airstrip before in my little plane I would say it is only 500' long.) 

 The town is cute, on the ocean, with a stiff breeze--sometimes a REAL stiff breeze!!!  April 25-28th at the Breakers, phone 843 444 4444, reduced rate for Marco members.

   So far the Terrorist hasn't found us, let's hope it stays that way!  (Maybe he will show up at Myrtle Beach and let the air out of all of our tires!)

MARCO Grand Rounds for April 14, 2013

I would like to congratulate the 34 stations that were able to make the transition to the new frequency of 14.344 the past Sunday....we had to QSY to 14.341 because of another station's QRM, but things worked out much better than anticipated.  

 

The "thing" (terrorist) was occupying our normal frequency so we made the switch--let's hope he doesn't follow us.  I note Wayne K1WDR has idented the "thing" (note small letters) with a report dated back 13 years ago--proof psychopaths (or sociopaths) don't change.  We have known for about 3 months his identity and his past record and last week I sent my 4th, this one registered, letter to the FCC in Gettysburg along with a copy to my Congressman--I did note there was a station that identified itself as a "monitor."  Whether the FCC is a paper tiger we will soon find out.

 

This Sunday we will discuss "Inoculations needed for travel," as requested, since world-wide traveling will soon increase with the better weather in the N. Hemisphere.  DO NOT mention 14.344 if you should tune into 14.307 as the jerk will follow us!!!!

 

We haven't heard from Harry WB9EDP, Ellen, KC6ARN, Linda KE5BQK, and Bernie KD5QHV lately, hope they are all okay.  Good to have Bruce KM2L back in harness!

MARCO Grand Rounds for March 31, 2013

This Sunday we will attempt to discuss "ABSINTH" (Absinth makes the heart grow fonder",  La fee verte) and a problem all of us are running into with the use of statin drugs, i.e., "Rhabdomyolysis."  (muscleosis)

     In order to succeed we will have to grab the freq. early (14.307) as there is a big contest this weekend.  If unable, we will postpone the discussion until the following weekend.

Robert Smithwick, W6CS, Silent Key

MARCO lost another of its giants when Robert "Smitty" Smithwick, W6CS, passed away on March 22, 2013.

Smitty was instrumental in the founding of MediShare International, MARCO's charitable arm. He served as the first Chairman of MediShare International, forging links with several partner agencies including the Bush Hospital Foundation, International Aid and Direct Relief International. Under his leadership, the organization completed projects in Rwanda, Kenya, Zambia and Malawi.

MARCO and MediShare were but a small part of Smitty's achievements. He was on the DX Honor Roll, hosted a team at his house for the WRTC held in San Francisco, and counted numerous famous DXers among his close friends. He was a highly successful pediatric dentist in northern California and served in California's Department of Health under Governor Ronald Reagan. The accomplishment that made him the proudest was helping to found Foothill and DeAnza Colleges.

Smitty was 93 years old at the time of his passing.

This Sunday we will briefly mention DMSO and then shift to the 200th anniversary of John Snow's birth--he is the one who diagnosed Cholera in London and traced it to a watering pump in the Soho in 1850.  It wasn't until 1883 that Koch and Louis Pasteur introduced the germ theory--just think of getting sick in the early 19th Century--with no antibiotics!  Cholera was a big killer and they thought it was caused by bad smelly air!  (which it was in a way!).  Tune in and bring your "NUMB NOSE".,,,,,and remember, "Growing old is mandatory, growing wise is optional."

The past Sunday Grand Round of the Air was cut short by the interruptions of the "terrorist."    I have sent three messages to the FCC to help us deter this individual-- without a response.  It is apparent the FCC is not our answer.

 

Now I have come to the conclusion that we should attempt to help this pschopath before he substitutes a gun for the microphone.  I am requesting Chip N5RTF, our excellent psychiatrist for help by giving a talk, and Chip is an excellent speaker, on "Psychopathic" or "Sociopathic" Behavior.  Perhaps it will work.  Since the terrorist lives in Michigan, Chipper should be able to get through okay.

 

If Chip is unable, we will continue the discussion on "DREAMS."

This Sunday we hope to discuss the latest findings from the current New England Journal of Medicine releasing the latest figures on the efficacy of mammography in diagnosing breast cancer.  Strange as it may seem, since the inauguration of mammography in 1973 the morbidity and mortality of this disease hasn't changed.  Does this mean mammography is worthless?  Far 

from it, but what are its advantages?  Disadvantages?  Tune in should be fun.

      Drugs to be discussed include Perjecta, Yervoy, Provenge, Terceva, Avastin & Proton-beam therapy which costs twice as much as X-ray radiation.  I had a doctor friend with terminal cancer who told me, "Living has gotten too expensive, I prefer to die."  He did and saved his grandchildren's college money.  What would WE do under similar circumstances--or is that decision too difficult to make unless you are under the scaffold.  Tune in, should be gruesome FUN (?)

2013 MARCO Meeting Details Announced

The following was received today from  Mary Favaro, AE4BX, MARCO's President:

 

After making adjustments for the busy schedules of the Marco group and hotel availability, we now have a firm meeting date and the contract signed.  It will be held April 26-28 2013 at the Breakers Resort in Myrtle Beach.  There was a disconcerting delay receiving the contract after I thought everything was finally settled.  Turned out they were sending it to another client, Dr Mary Mathis of the BellSouth group.  I made more noise, the secretary sent a copy to my Email, made out entirely to the wrong person and listing the wrong Email, but to MARCO and for our dates nevertheless.   They apologized enough times to make me think that was not their usual modus operandi so on we go.

 

The hotel has a website:  www.breakers.com.    Rooms may be reserved individually and will give you a choice of condos, oceanfront rooms and suites and ocean view rooms.   They will range from $99 - 129 per night.  They have three buildings on the ocean and rooms are in all three buildings.  

 

I brought a list of local attractions to the Dayton meeting (yes we have more than golf).  If anybody would like the page faxed I'll be happy to oblige.   Come early and stay late.  Myrtle Beach is a jolly and fun place.    And of course perfect weather will be a personal guarantee.....................

This Sunday we will discuss Melinda Beck's excellent article in the May 22 Wall Street Journal entitled, "THE CURSE OF A DIAGNOSIS."  it concerns the new tests that are now able to pick up early Alzheimer's--does it do more harm than good? 

     We will also welcome the new members we enlisted in Dayton over the past weekend, and if time permits, some of the accomplishments we made.  Conclusion from Dayton:  Ham radio is very much alive--there was a line of young people around the block waiting to take their ham-exams, the ham census in the US is around 700,000, an all-time high. 

     Tune in Sunday, should be fun. 

MARCO at Hamvention, Part II

On Saturday temperatures were hot. Those who walked the flea market soon became drenched in sweat. It is a rare Hamvention at which one gets to complain about the good weather!

The action continued at MARCO's booth. Members old and new stopped by to chat, and we recruited close to 15 new members.

The banquet, held at the Airport Holiday Inn  featured a buffet and a rollicking 80th birthday in the adjoining room. Lou Wiederhold, WA1HGE led us in a remembrance of departed members Ted Hatfield, KQ4IC and Alfred Greenwald, WA2CBA.

The President's gavel was passed to Mary Favaro, AE4BX, who already had plans in place for next year's meeting, to be held in Myrtle Beach, SC. The tentative date is April 5th to 7th, 2013.

Chip Keister, N5RTF presented a thought-provoking talk, detailing his thoughts about concrete and abstract thinking.

With bodies, spirits and minds all well-nourished, we said our good-byes until next year.

MARCO at Hamvention

Here are a few random thoughts and observations after a day in Dayton.

The weather  is so good that many of us thought we had come to the wrong place. We have been treated to sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70's.

The Membership Meeting was successful, with a good deal of constructive conversation (See previous post, which contains the minutes).

There are some interesting new toys to view at Hara Arena. The show-stopper in my view is Flex Radio's new Flex 6000. All of the required computing power has been moved within the case of this rig, so one needs to run only a simple interface program on the external computer. This allows simple remote operation of the radio. Slick!

The new Kenwood flagship radio is on display under glass. It is hefty, looks beautiful all lit up, and has more controls than the space shuttle.

Ten Tec is coming out soon with a nice QRP update of the Argonaut.

The BIG BUY of the weekend was by KD5QHV/KE5BQK, who will soon own a new SteppIR beam. . K6JW, KD5QHV and AA4FL made heavy purchases - they each will lug home a Vibroplex Cube, the new paddle affixed to a 6 pound base. N5RTF picked up a new Wouxun handheld. He is now learning to speak Chinese so he can use it.

Dinner  on Friday night was an odyssey. KE5QQK and KD5QHV peeled off and returned to Bob Evans, as this franchise has no restaurants in El Paso and Linda is sampling their fare every chance she gets. The rest of us piled into the hotel's van, and after a long drive over back roads arrived at a familiar strip of chain restaurants just off I-75. All of which had a 1 hour wait for seating. So... we piled back onto the van and returned to the area of the hotel. Eventually we dined at Tumble Weed Grill. The food was generic, the service was excellent, and we all had a good time.

The meeting was called to order by Linda, KE5BQK at 8:04 EDT. She thanked those members who have assisted her during her presidency.

Minutes of the 2011 meeting were read and approved. 

Secretary’s Report (W4DAN). Membership is 206, including 55 who are not currently paid-up. Some members have not received their copies of Aether. This appears to be due to damage by the post office.

Treasurer’s report (WA1HGE). Our balance is holding steady. We have $12697.73 and $6441 in a CD.

Webmaster report (KM2L). The email  list has approximately 90 members. The web site has remained secure over the past year with no incidents of hacking. Skype continues on Sunday mornings during grand rounds with W1BEW, N4TSC and sometimes N6DMV checking in.

Newsletter report (KD4GUA). Contributions are always welcome. There have been no complaints about about the jokes! There is sentiment to archive back copies of the newsletter on the website. These could be scanned and posted as .pdf files.  

Internet Audio report (N5RTF). Chip continues to try to stream audio for those who have no radio or are traveling. The quality is limited by his antenna situation and local noise. He would like to stream Warren’s audio directly. Chip can process, stream and record the audio and archive it to the website.

Medishare report (WB6OJB). We have $6524.11 in funds, but no project currently. Arnold has take on a project personally. W4DAN was contacted by a prisoner in Louisiana who requested a licensing Q&A book. Arnold obtained one for him, and he and Danny have sent him copies of QST and CQ. Arnold requested information on when and with whom our Zambian project took place. AE4BX has a contact who is a nurse in Zambia, and wil look into what her needs are.

New Business:

Discussion of Medishare projects. There is nothing that restricts us to projects in the third world. Sometimes members have outdated or surplus equipment, but it is not clear what to do with it. In the past, these were funneled to DRI or International Aid. Suggested that surplus equipment be listed in the Aether. Anyone with ideas for projects can email them to the President or Medishare Chair.

Change in dues schedule (W4DAN). Currently everyone has different dues renewal dates. It would be simpler to make payments due for everyone at the same time. W8CRK moved that this be adopted. Second by K6JW. WA1HGE spoke in support as the treasury runs on a calendar year. Motion carried - payments will be due on January 1 each year. 

Google Adwords proposal (NT8E). Dave had suggested an online advertising campaign to boost membership. He gave a powerpoint presentation explaining the Google ad words campaign. This is a Google pay-per-click advertising program (the top and right side of a Google search page). This is targeted advertising and thus generates a high percentage of interested viewers. You pay for each user who clicks on the ad.  That drives the user to our web site - then we need to capture their information and interest.  There are 450,000 monthly searches on “amateur radio.” There is low competition. This means our add would appear on page 1. You can set a daily budget or the price you pay per click. It is a competitive situation, so if you are too cheap your ad drops down the page. The price drops as your campaign’s quality score increases - this is based on longevity and activity of the add and the relevance of content on your landing page. It is a good idea to include a relevant keyword in your url. The Adsense campaign is a separate program that places Google ads on your page. If a visitor clicks on the ad, we receive revenue.

Suggestions for the website: We need to give people a reason to join - access to newsletters, (audio stream archives), and a members-only area with exclusive content. 

W8CRK moved that we authorize N8TE to establish a campaign, to include designing a landing page, authenticated membership area and online dues payment for the web site. The changes will be reviewed and approved by the Internet Committee prior to publication. Second by K6JW. Motion carried.

WA3ZZU moved that the budget for this project for the next year by not more than $1000. Second by K6JW.  Motion carried.

Discussion of Dayton meeting schedule (WA3ZZU). Chuck would prefer to have the meeting on Saturday and the go to the ham fest on Friday. Motion seconded by W8CRK. Motion carried.

Orlando Hamcation (KD4GUA). Warren and W4DAN visited last year and had a wonderful time. It is held in mid-February, and would be fun for other members to attend and hold a mini-meeting.

WA1HGE moved that we adjourn. The meeting was adjourned at 10:12 EDT. 

Election of officers was tabled until the evening of May 19, prior to the banquet. At that time, with no nominations from the floor, the following slate was elected:

 Bill KC9CS has a 6-year old grandchild who has SUDDENLY come down with a new disorder probably brought on by the reluctance of physicians to use antibiotics in children's URI infections.  This is manifest OVERNIGHT as an ACUTE obsessive-compulsive disorder that is thought to be an autoimmune reaction to the streptococcus. 

     It is suggested that you look up"PANDAS" on the internet prior to the program.  Do not confuse this with the teddy bear--it is a real problem that we will probably see more of in the future--keep on the cutting edge by tuning in.   Keep the blue side up.
